Harley Steffens’ practice, though focused in real estate, has included general corporate transactions, health care, and securities matters. Harley represents commercial real estate developers, public and private corporations, investment companies, family offices, and lending institutions including state and national banks and insurance companies. Development clients include local, regional, and national developers, as well as landlord and tenants in retail, industrial, and office leases. A transactional lawyer, Harley is licensed in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, and his areas of practice include, but are not limited to:

  • Business and tax planning for real estate owners, investors, joint ventures, and partnerships
  • IRS Section 1031 transactions
  • Conservation easements, IRS Section 170(h)
  • Asset-based lending including loan participations
  • Representing owners and tenants in PILOT transactions
  • Originating, negotiating, and advising commercial clients on public and private restrictions, easements, and covenants
  • Entity formation and structuring

He serves on the firm’s marketing committee and is a member of the Tennessee, Mississippi, and the Memphis Bar Associations. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for both the Mid-South Food Bank and the Urban Art Commission as the Treasurer. He has previously served on the steering committee of ArtsMemphis/Conservation Through Art, as a committee member of Ducks Unlimited, and on the Alumni Board of Presbyterian Day School.  He is a member of The Guild of St. Hubert at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where volunteers cook and serve game dinners at local charities.

Mr. Steffens has been selected by Mid-South Super Lawyers magazine to the Rising Stars list in the field of real estate law for the last 5 years and was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2024 in the fields of Real Estate Law, Banking and Finance Law, and Corporate Law for the seventh year.
