Richard joined Evans Petree PC immediately after his graduation from Vanderbilt Law School in 1994.
Since 2016, Richard has served as lead counsel on approximately 30 M&A transactions ranging from $50 MM to $400 MM in enterprise value as well as numerous additional deals involving consideration of less than $50 MM. These transactions have been in a variety of industries including manufacturing, product distribution, dealerships (automobile, heavy duty truck & heavy equipment), logistic services and health care. Complimenting his M&A work, Richard serves as outside general counsel to a number of companies, directing a team of Evans Petree attorneys to advise these clients on acquisitions, tax planning (particularly Tennessee Franchise & Excise Taxes), general contract matters, real property matters and labor & employment issues.
Richard also represents a number of local and regional banks in commercial and industrial loans and over the past 5 years has closed approximately 125 “new money” loans ranging from $1 MM equipment loans to $100 MM + syndicated acquisition loans.
Mr. Nichol was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2025 in the fields of Banking and Finance Law, Business Organizations (including LLCs and Partnerships), Closely Held Companies/Family Businesses Law, Corporate Law, Tax Law, and Mergers and Acquisitions Law for the thirteenth year. He was also named the Best Lawyers 2017 Business Organizations “Lawyer of the Year” in Memphis and the Best Lawyers 2018 Closely Held Companies and Family Businesses Law “Lawyer of the Year” in Memphis.
Richard serves on the Board of Evans Petree PC and is also the firm’s Treasurer.
